Forests of K’gari (Fraser Island)

K’gari (Fraser Island) is the world’s largest sand island and contains diverse forests, including 1,000 year old satinay trees, towering kauri pines, and ancient giant ferns. It was inscribed to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1992 and is the only place on Earth where tall rainforest grows in sand at elevations of more than 200 metres.
K’gari attracts more than 500,000 visitors each year due to its exceptional natural beauty, history, biodiversity and cultural significance. The national park is managed by the Queensland Government, working with partners in the community to preserve the outstanding natural environment, including the forest communities, consistent with legislation for the protection and use of the national park.
